Interesting Facts About Red Foxes
There is simply no denying that there are a number of unique creatures on this planet. Not are these creatures unique in their own right, but in many ways, they are essential to the ecosystem. All that aside, it probably is the fox species that stands out the most, the red foxes in particular. These creatures can be found in abundance in certain areas of the world.
Heck, you can even find them in certain neighborhoods and camping sites either looking for food or shelter. This is because the creature is not specifically defined to forests, mountains, or deserts. With their unique skills and survival techniques, these creatures can learn to adapt in urban and semi-urban settings. If you thought these facts were interesting then you have a lot more to learn about these creatures and what they bring to the ecosystem.
Found In Abundance
You just learned in the opening paragraph that red foxes can be found in abundance in various parts of the world. This is because these creatures are the second most populated land mammal on the planet. They only come in second next to the human being.
Not only this but over their years on this planet, they have spread all across major continents in the northern hemisphere. And, the more interesting bit is that they reproduce and procreate in a similar manner to that of humans. Simply put, they are going to keep evolving, while their population sees a steady rise.
First Introduced In The 19th Century
Even though these creatures are the second most populated mammal on the plant, it wasn’t until the 19th that they were introduced into the ecosystem. And, it was in Australia where they were first introduced. Since this conception, they have spread across a chuck of the continent. It was during this time that they dubbed the scientific name Vulpes.

Vary In Colors And Sizes
Most people would automatically make the assumption that the red fox is red. And, this is partly right. Yes, there are some red foxes out there that do come born with red colts of pelts. However, this does not mean it is the only color that they can adapt to.
In fact, there are currently over 45 different known species. Despite this revelation, the fox is still largely grouped into two different categories. This would be the southern foxes, which are mostly found in Asia and Africa. These creatures are the smaller of the two without a doubt. It is the northern foxes that really boast a large stature.
You probably already know that the red fox is one that has to hunt for its food. Unlike the human, the fox cannot just walk into a restaurant and order a slab of ribs. And, this is why they were designed the way that they are. Not only are these creatures opportunistic hunters, but they have elongated torsos with small limbs, which affords them the ability to make faster displacements.
The tail of the creature is almost as long as the body. In fact, it accounts for about 70 percent of the length of the body. That being said, even the tail of the fox was designed in an opportunistic way. It was designed to extend towards the ground to help the fox maintain balance. Not only this, but they can use it for cover in the winter as well as communication.
Barking And Night Sounds
Just in case you didn’t know it foxes like wolves are a part of the canine family. In fact, your dog sitting right next to you right now might have part wolf or fox in him. Even though the two are not quite the same, they do share similar traits and attributes.
The red fox even creates a barking noise during the night. In an urban environment, this noise could easily be mistaken for a neighborhood dog. Foxes make these noises for several different reasons and there is usually a reason that they are made during the wee hours of the night.
To start out, the female fox will make these noises during the mating rituals, which usually takes place during the night hours. Along with this, these creatures will bark when they feel threatened or scared. It would not be uncommon to hear a fox barking if a hunter crept upon his or her den during the middle of the night. Foxes, like dogs, also use these barking or screaming noises to communicate.

Near-Perfect Auditory Senses
Most people have probably already made the assumption that foxes have great senses. They have to after all or how else would they capture their prey? Yes, it is true that they have excellent sense, but the truly remarkable thing is that they have a near-perfect auditory sense.
A fox or any species can hear a squealing rat from as far as 100 meters away. As far as their sight goes, they mostly just react to movements, but do possess the ability to see very well in dark conditions. This is just another edge that makes them innate hunters. In fact, a foxes vision in dark condition would be similar to that of looking through a night vision scope.
Weird Social Behaviors
You will find that the fox really is kind of a lone creature. They are one that likes to do a lot of things on their own. They like to hunt alone and for the most part, they like to live alone. However, this doesn’t mean that they don’t take their parental responsibilities seriously. You already know that foxes like to mate just like humans. This is usually followed by the production of offspring.
When offspring comes into the picture, both the male and female will put their weird socially behaviors aside and adapt. Both the mother and the father will stick around to raise the kits until they are at least 6 weeks or older. The mother will even stay around for longer, but after the 6 week period, the farther will venture out and go about his own business.
